An important part of your organization’s business continuity and disaster recovery (BCDR) strategy is figuring out how to keep corporate workloads and apps up and running when planned and unplanned outages occur. Site Recovery helps do this by orchestrating replication, fail-over, and recovery of workloads and apps so that they’ll be available from a secondary location if your primary location goes down. ASR can also be used as a migration tool to replicate protected servers into Azure. Here’s what Site Recovery can do for your business:
- Simplify your BCDR strategy—Site Recovery makes it easy to handle replication, fail-over and recovery of multiple business workloads to Azure.
- Provide flexible replication—Using Site Recovery you can replicate VM workloads running on Hyper-V, VMware, and Windows/Linux physical servers.
- Easy fail-over and recovery—Site Recovery provides zero data loss test fail overs to support disaster recovery drills without affecting production environments.
- Eliminate secondary datacentre—You can replicate to a secondary on-premises site, or to Azure.
- Integrate with existing BCDR technologies—Site Recovery partners with other application BCDR features. For example, you can use Site Recovery to protect the SQL Server back end of corporate workloads, including native support for SQL Server AlwaysOn to manage the fail-over of availability groups.
Azure Backup is the service that you use to back up and restore your data in the Microsoft cloud. It replaces your existing on-premises or off-site backup solution with a cloud-based solution that is reliable, secure, and cost-competitive. It also helps protect assets that run in the cloud. Azure Backup provides recovery services built on a world-class infrastructure that is scalable, durable, and highly available.
Azure Backup can be used to backup and protect data and applications on your on premise servers, backup scheduling can be automated with the Azure backup agent to a secure recovery vault in Azure. Azure Backup also has support for encryption, ensuring all data that is backed up to the cloud is secure. In Azure Backup you can use Recovery Services vault when protecting Azure VMs. The Recovery Services vault is the next generation of vaults and is used to backup Azure IaaS VMs both under the classic and ARM portals.
Azure Backup can also be used for application level backups and include granular level backups and restore capabilities for the following business mission critical applications such as SQL Server, SharePoint, and Exchange Server.
