What is MPLS and how does it work?

Multi Protocol Label Switching (MPLS) is a network protocol used in high performance wide area data networks. It marks the data packets with virtual labels, which are then used to move the data from one network node to another. This provides an extremely efficient and secure method of routing data on a private customer network protected from the Internet. MPLS removes the need for local router configuration and the subsequent encryption which is required for secure transmission of data over the Internet for example when using Virtual Private Networks.

In an MPLS network the forwarding decision is based on the label rather that the full IP address look up, making for a fast and efficient multi-site data networking solution. MPLS is a centrally managed and configured solution, with very high levels of security whilst at the same time reducing the overall cost of ownership. As there is no complex configuration required on the customer router this removes the need for expensive equipment and ongoing complex IT management at each site.

The UK is a patchwork of carrier networks, in some cities multiple carriers are available and in others only one has coverage. For this reason a single carrier wide area network solution connecting multiple sites is rarely efficient or cost effective.

Fibre Ethernet – 10Mbps to 10Gbps

Fibre Ethernet is delivered over fibre cables. It provides the best service level guarantees and can be upgraded easily.

Ethernet Fibre (FTTC) – 2Mbps to 80Mbps (asynchronous)

FTTC is delivered over fibre cables. The service is relatively new so availability is limited while the service is rolled out. FTTC is asynchronous (faster download speeds than upload).

Ethernet First Mile (EFM) – 2Mbps to 30Mbps

EFM is a relatively new product. It is delivered over multiple copper lines. It can be installed within 1 month and offers a lower cost alternative to Ethernet.

ADSL2+/VDSL – Low cost and installed fast

ADSL2+/VDSL is widely available and low cost. Speeds are asynchronous (faster download speeds than upload). ADSL2+/VDSL is ideal for backup use of very small offices.
